So, they say that if it's something you want to do, it's a
hobby, but if it's something you don't want to do, but keep doing anyway, it's
an addiction. I'm not sure which category the following "hobbies" fall into.
You be the judge.
Armchair Psychology
Of some people it may be euphemistically said, "He's been around
the block a time or two." In my case, it's more like I've
been around the whole neighborhood and more than once or
twice. "But I feel much better now," to quote a popular
sitcom character of the eighties. I run a couple of
support groups, one, called
"Clean-LDS". I try to
help people struggling with difficult problems.
I'm no professional, but as Dr. Patrick J. Carnes says,
the best therapist is someone who's been down the same
road before.
Weight-lifting
This is a new hobby for me. I have long wanted
to "get in shape." Well, I've already got a shape,
but it's not the one I want, so I got myself a personal
trainer at the Cascade Athletic Club and
started learning how to work-out correctly.
Writing
Always wanted to be a writer, but also wanted to be a provider
for my family, so I compromised. I earn a living as a
computer professional and write for fun. Do I hear someone
reading this and thinking, "Don't quit your day job?"
Dark Shadows
Way back in the sixties, there was this phenomenal soap opera
called, "Dark Shadows," and everyday after school, the
nation's youth would literally run home from school
to get there in time to see this show. It still has a
sizable fan base. I run the
Dark Shadows internet mailing list,
and I've even written a novel about the old characters of
the series, sort of like a "Dark Shadows: The Next Generation."
I call my novel,
Dark Redemption.
Music
I have often served as the music chairman for my church, selecting hymns to be
sung by the congregation each week, arranging for special
music; solos and such. I do some arrangements and minor
composing, all self-taught (which is indicative of the
quality of the things I do). My philosophy is, "Those who
can, do. Those who can't, teach. Those who can't do or teach,
are self-taught."
